Vehicle Excise Duty FAQs

How much is car tax (VED) in 2026?

For cars registered from 1 April 2017 the standard annual rate is £200. First-year rates range from £10 for 0 g/km CO2 to £5,690 for over 255 g/km. Cars with a list price over £40,000 (or over £50,000 for electric cars) pay an additional £440 a year for five years from the second tax payment.

Do electric cars pay road tax in 2026?

Yes. From 1 April 2025 electric cars pay the standard VED rate of £200 a year. Their first-year rate is £10. EVs with a list price over £50,000 also pay the £440 expensive car supplement for five years.

What is the expensive car supplement?

If your car had a list price above £40,000 when new (or above £50,000 for zero-emission vehicles), you pay an extra £440 a year on top of the standard £200 rate. This supplement applies for five years from the second time the car is taxed, regardless of its current value.

How do I find my car's CO2 emissions?

Check your V5C registration certificate, the car manufacturer's specification sheet, or enter your registration number on the GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service. The CO2 figure used for VED is from the official WLTP test.

Is VED different for diesel cars?

In the first year only, diesel cars that do not meet the Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standard pay a higher first-year rate — typically one band above a petrol car with the same CO2 figure. From the second year onward all fuel types pay the same £200 standard rate.

Can I pay VED monthly?

Yes. You can pay by monthly or 6-monthly direct debit. Monthly direct debit costs 5% more than a single annual payment — about £210 total for the £200 standard rate.
